Tips for Job Seekers in a Competitve Climate

In recent years, the economy has been on a downward spiral unseen in decades. As consumer confidence dropped, industry bubbles burst left and right and financial crisis' occurred routinely, employers were forced to shed millions of jobs in order to remain in business. This led to an unemployment rate that reached over 15% nationally and was considerably higher in individual states hit the hardest. As the economy starts to show signs of rebounding, companies are beginning to start hiring individuals again in anticipation of optimistic economic outlooks. Although the job market is beginning to look more promising by the day, the effects of the previous years are still being felt and some will say even more than ever.

Due to the type of jobs being shed by the market over the course of the last few years, the demographics of the unemployed has changed dramatically. Unlike in previous years, not only are newly emerging college graduates clamoring for employment, but highly experienced previously employed individuals are also searching for employment. This has created a uniquely competitive job market that requires an increasingly higher amount of resourcefulness and creativity in terms of procuring employment than during previous periods. Because of the nature of the current job market, it has become imperative to learn different tricks of the trade in order to ascertain employment and with that being said, let us look at a few tips and tricks that will help the average job seeker find the employment they require.

One of the most important qualities today's job seeker needs to exhibit is that of creativeness. With technology increasing daily, one must get with the times and use new resources to find jobs. Although it helps to check the classifieds section of a newspaper for open positions, companies are still feeling the pain of the economic collapse and thus are trending towards creative yet inexpensive ways to fill offices. Examples of this include social media web sites such as Twitter, Tweetmyjob and Facebook. As maintaining these kinds of accounts are free, many companies small and large are beginning to utilize them not only for press releases but for job opening information as well. Furthermore, web sites like Craigslist are becoming increasingly popular with job recruiters as it too is free to use and is highly trafficked. Visit the employment section of your local Craigslist site and you will be amazed at the shear number of available jobs.

Another great quality of a successful job seeker is that of persistence. What most individuals fail to realize is that the majority of companies who are hiring do so in anticipation of a need for new hirers. For example, unless the industry you are seeking a job within has a high turnover rate, there is a good chance that most companies within your chosen industry post job openings knowing that they have months to find the perfect applicant as opposed to high turnover industries like the food service industry who generally require immediate employees when they announce an opening. Because of this, you need to remember to be persistent in your search for a job. Make sure you follow up with potential employees when looking for a job as undoubtedly the hiring manager has a desk full of resumes and applications and knowing that they have months to choose the perfect applicant, they are afforded the luxury of waiting to see which applicants truly are interested. Following up with a potential employer could easily lead to your resume being moved from the larger pile of general applicants to the much smaller pile of applicants who have showed continued interest.

One of the most overlooked job opportunities is that of the temp to perm industry. Due to the negative connotations attributed to "temporary employees", most people fail to even realize that not only will these jobs help you pay those bills piling up the same way a permanent position will but most of these positions are actually potentially permanent jobs. When you visit a job recruiting office, they will inform you which jobs meeting your skills will be solely temporary and which ones have the potential of turning into permanent positions. Often times you can quickly find a job at such an agency and it becomes up to you to decide if you want to put forth the effort to make it a permanent job.

All in all, it is obviously harder to find a job in the current labor market but it isn't impossible at the least. It requires persistence, creativeness and potentially the lowering of pride somewhat to find employment but if you play your cards right you will land the job you have been looking for all along. Simply follow the above mentioned tips and do subsequent research and you will have a better chance at finding employment in this competitive market.
